As a child, Wilma Rudolph had polio which left her left leg paralyzed. With extensive therapy she regained the ability to walk and became a world class runner. Rudolph made the 1960 Rome Olympics, where she made history by becoming the first American woman to win three gold medals in track and field during a single Olympiad.
