John Brown was an abolitionist who believed that insurrection was necessary to end slavery. During Bleeding Kansas, a series of violent clashes in the Kansas Territory during the mid-1850s, Brown led a raid in direct response to the sacking of the anti-slavery town of Lawrence, KS. Brown was ultimately captured, convicted of treason and executed.
