Abraham Lincoln signed the Pacific Railway Act in 1862, authorizing the first transcontinental railroad, revolutionizing national commerce and travel. That same year, his Homestead Act offered 160 acres to settlers who would develop western lands, ultimately distributing 270 million acres and establishing America as a continental superpower.
