Maria Goeppert-Mayer was a theoretical physicist. Despite her brilliance, she worked unpaid while her husband held faculty positions. She persisted through the Depression, working on the Manhattan Project and eventually developing the nuclear shell model that revolutionized our understanding of nuclei, earning her the 1963 Nobel Prize in Physics.
