Barbara McClintock

Barbara McClintock, American cytogeneticist, discovered "jumping genes" (transposable elements) in maize during the 1940s, challenging the belief that genes remain fixed in position. Initially dismissed, her groundbreaking work earned her the Nobel Prize in 1983, making her the first woman to receive an unshared Nobel in Physiology or Medicine.
