James Folger founded Folgers Coffee Company. At 14, he left Nantucket for California during the Gold Rush, reaching San Francisco in 1850. Instead of mining, he worked as a carpenter rebuilding after fires and at a coffee mill. He established his coffee company in 1860. A notable descendant includes Abigail Folger, who was murdered in 1969 by the Mansons.
