Hertha Ayrton (b. 1854) was a pioneering engineer and inventor who broke barriers for women in science and technology with her contributions to electrical engineering. Her work on the electric arc improved the efficiency of early lighting systems. The first woman to present to and join the IEE, she also championed the suffrage movement.
