1. Local Business Owners Raise Concerns Over Main Street Construction Impacting Holiday Season
Local business owners on Main Street are voicing frustrations about the ongoing construction that has disrupted foot and vehicle traffic, threatening their holiday sales. During the city meeting Tuesday, October 8, Lika, the owner of La Belle, expressed concerns that the storm sewer project, which has closed a major section of Main Street, is making it difficult for retailers to survive. With the holiday shopping season fast approaching, she, along with other business owners, urged city officials to speed up the construction or partially reopen the street to improve access for customers. They fear that continued closures during this crucial time could lead to significant financial losses for many shops.
City officials, while sympathetic to the complaints, explained that the project’s complexity, weather constraints, and contractor availability limit their ability to accelerate the timeline. Public Works Director Jeff Woodward assured the community that efforts were being made to finish the work before Thanksgiving, though unexpected issues and weather could delay the reopening. As a temporary solution, a five-foot-wide sidewalk will be installed at the intersection of Main and Euclid for this weekend’s Burnin Down Main event, allowing pedestrian access across the closed area. However, officials emphasized that fully reopening the street before the holiday season remains a challenge.

2. Cassie Chick Nominated as New McPherson County Treasurer
Cassie Chick, of Galva, was nominated as the new McPherson County Treasurer by Republican Precinct Committee members during a convention held at the McPherson Coop Credit Union. Chick will succeed Teresa Nelson, who is retiring before the end of her current term. Chick, with over ten years of experience at Kansas Secured Title, has already begun transitioning into the role with Nelson’s guidance. Chick will serve the remainder of Nelson’s term, which runs until October 2025 and is expected to run in the November 2024 general election. The timing of County Treasurers taking office in Kansas is unusual, as they are elected in the November general election but do not officially begin their 4 year term until the following October. Her official appointment to serve out the remainder of Nelson's term is pending approval from the governor.
Following the nominating convention, the Committee held their biennial reorganization, during which the current party officers were re-elected for two-year terms. These include county chair Cheryl Stieben, vice-chair Bob Arnold, Secretary James Bohnenblust, and Treasurer Royce Janssen.

3. McPherson Chamber Announces Four Award Recipients for Annual Banquet
The McPherson Chamber of Commerce has announced four awards that will be presented during their annual banquet on Tuesday, October 22, at 11:30 a.m. in the community building. Kena Dacus, of Dacus Auto Body and Collision Repair, will receive the 2024 Emerging Leader Award for her commitment to the community and excellence in business. Sendeo Staffing Central Kansas will be recognized as the New Chamber Member Business, an award given to a business that has joined the chamber within the past three years and has actively participated in chamber activities and committees. Additionally, the Community Builder Award will be presented to the United Way of McPherson County, and The Locker Room will receive the Entrepreneur of Business Award. Reservations for the banquet must be made by October 17 by calling 620-241-3303 or emailing the chamber at mcphersonks.org.

4. Turkey Creek Golf Course Upgrades Underway with New Retaining Wall and Cart Garage
The Turkey Creek Golf Course is undergoing significant improvements, including the construction of a new retaining wall aimed at enhancing both the infrastructure and appearance of the course. The project involves the transportation and installation of over 600 retaining wall blocks, with city crews already having moved more than half of them to the site. The remaining blocks are scheduled for delivery by October 23, 2024. Despite minor delays due to equipment being diverted to a separate project at Lakeside Park, officials expect the retaining wall construction to be completed by Thanksgiving, keeping the course on track for its winter operations.
In addition to the retaining wall project, preliminary work for the construction of a new golf cart garage at Turkey Creek Golf Course is also underway. A site survey and plan, completed by Garber Surveying, were recently approved by the city, allowing the project to move forward with the next phase of construction.

5. McPherson County Commissioners Sign Bridge Design Contract for Arapahoe Road Project
The McPherson County Commissioners have signed contract documents with engineering firm Kirk and Michael for design services on a bridge project along Arapahoe Road, located just west of 8th Avenue and south of Inman. The firm was the only one to respond to the county's request for proposals issued last month. The contract outlines that the costs for the design work will not exceed $50,000. A significant portion of the project’s total cost will be covered by a KDOT grant the county has secured, which will help facilitate the completion of the bridge, expected to be constructed by 2026.
