1 Bullpups Fall to Great Bend in Season Opener, 28-6

The McPherson High School Bullpups kicked off their 2024 season with a 28-6 loss to the Great Bend Panthers on Friday night at McPherson Stadium. In their season opener against the Panthers, the Bullpups struggled to find offensive rhythm, falling behind in the second half after a competitive first two quarters.

The game started fast as Great Bend returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. McPherson quickly answered with a touchdown from Catch DeLaney, leveling the score at 6-6 with 6:22 left in the first quarter. Both teams missed their extra point attempts, and the first quarter ended in a stalemate.

McPherson's offense showed promise early in the second quarter, driving deep into Panther territory. However, a sack and missed opportunity on a 4th down pass left the Bullpups unable to capitalize. Great Bend took advantage late in the half, scoring a 2-yard touchdown pass with just 24.7 seconds remaining before halftime. The Panthers added a two-point conversion to take a 14-6 lead into the locker room.

The second half saw Great Bend seize control of the game. A 79-yard rushing touchdown on their first play of the third quarter extended the lead to 21-6. McPherson's offense continued to struggle, and after a turnover on downs, Great Bend scored again on a trick play from the 6-yard line to push the lead to 28-6.
The Bullpups were unable to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter, as the Panthers' defense kept them in check, sealing a 28-6 victory. McPherson dropped their season opener to Great Bend for the second straight year.

The Bullpups will look to rebound next Friday when they host Circle at McPherson Stadium.
