1. McPherson County Republicans to hold nomination convention for open Second District County Commission seat

The McPherson County Republican Committee will hold a nominating convention Monday, Jan. 6 at 7 p.m. at the McPherson County Building at 122 West Marlin to fill the Second District County Commission seat after Dave Bohnenblust declined the position to become County Public Works Director on Feb. 1. The nominee, once appointed, will serve until the 2026 general election when the final two years of the term will be on the ballot. The district includes Canton, McPherson, Meridian and Spring Valley Townships, the city of Canton, and McPherson's Ward 1 (east of Main Street and north of Kansas Avenue). Interested candidates can contact County Chair Cheryl Stieben at rstieben@sbcglobal.net or 620-242-6445, or James Bohnenblust at jamesbohnenblust@protonmail.com or 620-755-3522.

2. Euclid work may be paused until spring

McPherson's Euclid Street project made progress this week with the completion of new sidewalk sections and storm sewer installations. Public Works reports that crews finished concrete work on the north side of Euclid east of Main Street, along with storm sewer improvements to the south of Euclid west of Main. The project faced a minor setback when workers discovered a void near Citizens Bank that required special attention, resulting in a $2,135 change order for flowable fill material and excavation work. However, with winter weather approaching, Public Works Director Jeff Woodward indicated that construction activities may need to pause until spring conditions allow work to resume. The project represents ongoing efforts to improve McPherson's stormwater management system and pedestrian infrastructure in the downtown area.

3. McPherson Opera House seeking bids to restore windows

The McPherson Opera House has launched the bidding process for a new preservation project funded by the Heritage Trust Fund grant, focusing on the restoration of two grand windows. The project, which requires removal, framework rebuilding, and reinstallation of the original windows, follows federal grant guidelines requiring public bid solicitation. "We are excited to begin this important project and invite qualified contractors to participate in the bidding process," said Jordan Bandy, Producing Director at McPherson Opera House. Interested contractors can obtain the Invitation to Bid packet at the Opera House Box Office on weekdays between 10:00 AM and 5:30 PM, or via email from Jordan.Bandy@mcphersonoperahouse.org, with sealed bids due by Monday, January 13th at 5:00 PM. 5. Winter weather to arrive this weekend

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Winter Storm Watch for McPherson and surrounding areas from Saturday afternoon through Sunday afternoon. The storm system is expected to bring a dangerous mix of freezing drizzle, freezing rain, sleet, and snow, with potential accumulations exceeding 4 inches of snow and sleet, plus ice accumulations greater than one-tenth of an inch. Wind gusts up to 35 mph could create blizzard-like conditions with blowing and drifting snow, leading to hazardous travel conditions and possible sporadic power outages. Following the weekend storm, an arctic blast will push into the region, plunging temperatures into the teens and single digits, with wind chills potentially dropping below zero. Local officials urge residents to monitor forecasts, delay non-essential travel, and ensure they have winter storm kits if travel is necessary.

Sports: Brothers leading McPherson Bullpups basketball

McPherson’s boys and girls basketball programs are currently being led by one bloodline. Brothers Clint and Kurt Kinnamon are coaching the Bullpups together for the first time. While Kurt has been leading the boys’ program for almost 30 years, Clint joined this season. He spent the last two years coaching the Remington boys. “They’re almost twins, like in their voices, the intensity, just everything,” said McPherson sophomore guard Rylie Whitfield. It’s Clint’s first time coaching girls’ basketball in nearly three decades. He takes over after Chris Strathman, who spent 29 years at McPherson. “The coaches have been ahead of me have a legacy that’s incredible. Being part of that was part of it. Being with Kurt here, you know, coaching the boys team, me coaching the girls team team, that was part of it, too,” said Clint. It’s not the first time Clint is following in his older brother’s footsteps. The two both played high school basketball at Saint John. Then, they each took the court at Hutchinson Community College and played football and basketball at McPherson College. Clint’s coaching history includes four state championships and three Kanas Coach of the Year honors. Kurt recently led the Bullpups to a perfect 25-0 record and a 4A boys state championship title. McPherson boys basketball is currently 5-1. The girls are 2-4 and expect to improve significantly by the end of the year. The teams continue the season on Jan. 7 at Augusta.
