1. McPherson Police Bolsters Anti-Drug Efforts with New Intelligence Officer, Camera Systems
The McPherson Police Department is launching a comprehensive public safety initiative combining new surveillance technology with specialized intelligence expertise. Chief Mikel T. Golden announced that U.S. Air Force Captain Victoria Curtis, an intelligence officer, has joined the department through July 2025 to spearhead crime analysis efforts and help implement a new $175,000 camera system, funded through a COPS grant from Senator Jerry Moran's congressional appropriations.
The camera program, which is still in the planning stages, will serve as an investigative tool for case follow-up, traffic collision investigations, locating missing persons, and combating criminal and drug activity. During Tuesday's city commission meeting, Golden emphasized that the combined approach of intelligence analysis and surveillance will help track drug dealers across communities, particularly in addressing the local fentanyl crisis. Curtis, who joins through the Department of Defense SkillBridge program at no cost to the city, will bring her military intelligence background to optimize the system's implementation, with more details to be released as the project develops.

2. McPherson United Way Campaign Nears Goal, Seeks Final Push
The McPherson United Way campaign is on the verge of reaching its 2025 goal, having raised $297,000 of its $300,000 target. "The great thing about the campaign is people give at will, and that money goes right back into our community," said Laura Parks, United Way representative, during Tuesday's city commission meeting. The funds support vital local programs including Oak Harbor Cottages and Meals on Wheels, directly benefiting McPherson residents. With just $3,000 left to reach their goal, United Way is making a final appeal to the community. Those interested in contributing can donate in person at the McPherson Chamber office, located at 306 N. Main Street. Both checks and cash are accepted. To learn more about donating or the programs supported by United Way, visit the McPherson Chamber office in person, call (620) 241-3303, or visit www.mcphersonchamber.org.

3. McPherson County Planning and Zoning Board Set to Hold New Officer Elections
A follow-up to last weeks #1 item...
The McPherson County Planning Board will conduct a new election of officers at its February 10 meeting after procedural issues were identified in last month's voting process. Planning, Zoning and Environmental Administrator Jon Kinsey confirmed that the original election did not follow proper nomination procedures as outlined in the board's bylaws. The board chair and secretary will oversee the new election process. The re-vote will determine positions for chair, vice chair, and secretary for the 2025 term.

4. McPherson County Approves Purchase of Three New Sheriff Patrol Vehicles
The McPherson County Commission has approved the purchase of three 2025 Dodge Durango patrol vehicles for the Sheriff's Department at a cost of $42,509 per unit from Midway Motors. Under Sheriff Bergstrom presented competing bids including Davis-Moore of Wichita and Long MacArthur of Salina. The vehicles, which will take three to six months for delivery, will replace aging units in the department's fleet, including one that will be transferred to the transport division. Each new vehicle will require approximately $3,000 in additional costs to transfer existing equipment, including cages and emergency lighting. The older vehicles being replaced will likely be sold at auction rather than traded.

5. McPherson Commits to Improving Snow Removal Following Citizen Feedback
The City of McPherson is taking steps to enhance its snow removal operations following citizen concerns about the recent snowstorm's lasting effects.
