The McPherson Police Department is making strides in modernizing its facilities and crime-fighting capabilities with a new substation currently under renovation near the post office. According to Police Chief Mikel Golden, the project is progressing well, with electricians and Reach Solutions currently installing new electrical data cables and HVAC systems. The renovation, expected to be completed by June, will address some of the department's space constraints and serve as a high-tech nerve center close to Main Street.
The department's modernization efforts extend beyond physical infrastructure to include advanced analytics and surveillance technology. A new $175,000 camera system, funded through a COPS grant from Senator Jerry Moran's congressional appropriations, will be strategically deployed throughout McPherson, particularly in crime hotspots identified through data analysis. Chief Golden emphasized that these cameras are "strictly just to catch the criminal element" rather than monitor everyday citizens. The new substation will feature a control room where camera feeds will be monitored. To maximize the effectiveness of these new technologies, the department has welcomed U.S. Air Force Captain Victoria Curtis, an intelligence officer joining through the Department of Defense SkillBridge program at no cost to the city, who will spearhead crime analysis efforts through July 2025.
As McPherson continues to grow, the police department is positioning itself to provide enhanced public safety services. While the department prepares for this technological leap forward, Chief Golden also reminds residents about immediate safety concerns, urging hydration during the upcoming Old School Day Parade and cautioning that vehicles parked in areas with parade route barricades will be towed.
