Breese Named as New Superintendent for Smoky Valley USD 400

Smoky Valley USD 400 announced Monday that Quentin Breese has been hired as the district's new Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1. Breese, who currently serves as Superintendent for Concordia USD 333, will succeed Heath Hogan, who is departing to lead Salina USD 305. A 2000 Bethany College graduate with deep ties to the community, Breese brings considerable experience to the position, having previously completed a practicum at Smoky Valley High School. His career includes serving as director of bands for Southeast of Saline USD 306 and various leadership roles at Concordia High School before becoming superintendent there in 2016. Breese holds a bachelor's degree in music education from Bethany College and a master's in Educational Leadership from Wichita State University, and is currently pursuing his doctorate at Kansas State University. District officials noted that Breese and his family expressed enthusiasm about returning to a community with which they have historical connections.

Mayor Reports Strong Progress in City Administrator Search

Mayor Clark Schultz reported significant progress in the search for Lindsborg's new city administrator during Monday's City Council meeting. In his update to the council, Schultz noted that nearly 20 applications have been received from well-qualified candidates with impressive credentials and relevant experience. "These are very good... they've got experience and credentials," Schultz emphasized. The selection process will now move forward with council members being consulted in smaller groups to review applications before narrowing the field to a manageable number of finalists. Those finalists will then be invited to visit Lindsborg to meet with the full council and staff representatives. The search comes as the city prepares for the departure of current administrator Kristi Northcutt.

Lindsborg Council Approves Updated Water Contract with Bethany College

The Lindsborg City Council unanimously approved a new 10-year water contract with Bethany College during Monday's meeting, addressing an agreement that had expired in late 2024. The contract provides raw, untreated water specifically for irrigation of the college's sports complex at a rate of $1.72 per 1,000 gallons, up from the previous rate of $1.52. City Administrator Kristi Northcutt explained that the rate increase better aligns with what other commercial users pay for water service, noting that incremental increases outlined in the previous contract had not been implemented over its term. Bethany College President Dr. Steve Eckman had already signed the agreement prior to the council meeting, having previously discussed and accepted the new terms. The contract stipulates that the water may only be used for sports complex irrigation purposes and cannot be sold or used elsewhere on campus.

Lindsborg Council Approves Ambulance Upgrade

The Lindsborg City Council unanimously approved the purchase of a Stryker Power Load cot system for the city's second ambulance during Monday's meeting. The system will help balance out usage between ambulances while reducing injury risk to EMS personnel by mechanically loading patients. By leveraging American Medical Response's (AMR, a national provider of emergency medical services and medical transportation) purchasing power, the city will save approximately $10,000, acquiring the system for $24,595.45 rather than the $34,000+ quoted directly from Stryker. The purchase complements a similar system installed in 2023 when the city's first ambulance underwent a chassis remount, and follows an unsuccessful attempt to fund the second unit through a Patterson Foundation grant.

Lindsborg Golf Course Thriving with GPS Upgrades and Growing Membership

The Lindsborg golf course is experiencing strong growth and technological advancement, according to Recreation Director Lauren Doak in her report at Monday's City Council meeting. Doak detailed how the course navigated a budget challenge when adding GPS screens to golf carts, which increased annual costs from the initially allocated $16,000 to approximately $19,000. The solution came through local support, with 11 area businesses providing $4,350 in sponsorships to offset the difference. Membership stands at 118 and continues to grow daily, with expectations to surpass last year's total of 130 members. The course's popularity is further evidenced by a waitlist for golf cart storage stalls. Council members and their families were invited to join members at the season kickoff barbecue scheduled for Sunday, May 4, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the clubhouse, where burgers and hot dogs will be served.
