1 Homecoming Thriller: McPherson Outlasts Winfield in Overtime, 29-23
McPherson High School’s football team delivered an unforgettable homecoming performance, edging out the Winfield Vikings in a 29-23 overtime victory. The Bullpups returned to action with a chance to even their season record, and they didn’t disappoint. The game started with a bang as McPherson’s Bishop Brown intercepted a pass on Winfield’s third down, returning it 31 yards for a pick-six. The Bullpups jumped to a 7-0 lead just 52 seconds into the game, setting the tone for an intense night. McPherson continued their early dominance with a 43-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Carter Allen to Ashton Malm, extending their lead to 13-0 after a missed extra point. However, Winfield responded late in the first quarter, finding the end zone on a 3rd-down pass to close the gap to 13-7 by the end of the opening quarter. Carter Allen added another score in the second quarter with an 18-yard rushing touchdown, and kicker Jaxon Hoover closed out the half with a field goal, giving McPherson a 23-7 lead at halftime.
Both teams struggled to find the end zone in the third quarter, with the score remaining 23-7 heading into the final 12 minutes. Winfield, however, mounted a furious comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring 16 unanswered points, including a clutch touchdown and a two-point conversion with just over a minute left to tie the game at 23-23. Despite a kickoff return by Ashton Malm for a touchdown being called back due to a holding penalty, McPherson’s defense held strong, stopping Winfield at the goal line on a critical 4th-and-1 in overtime. Brock Richardson then sealed the victory for the Bullpups with a short rushing touchdown, giving McPherson their second win of the season and sending the homecoming crowd into a frenzy. The Bullpups now sit at 2-2 on the season, bouncing back after a hard-fought contest that will be remembered for its dramatic finish.
