MCPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson Bullpups softball team preserved their unblemished record Tuesday, outlasting two-time defending 4A state champion Wamego 3-2 in a marathon 18-inning thriller. The victory improved the Bullpups to a remarkable 22-0 on the season, with senior pitcher Addie Herrera displaying extraordinary stamina by hurling all 18 innings and tossing an impressive 206 pitches against the Red Raiders' potent lineup.

The contest began with fireworks as Haely Hagemann blasted a home run to bring home Pera Bauer and tie the game 2-2 in the opening inning, setting the stage for 16 consecutive scoreless innings of pitching brilliance. Wamego's Tennessee-bound ace Peyton Hardenburger was nearly untouchable, recording 35 strikeouts while allowing just three hits over 16 innings. The deadlock was finally broken when Kynedi Huggard drove in Rylie Whitfield for the winning run, sending the Bullpups faithful into celebration and cementing McPherson's status as the team to beat in Kansas 4A softball.
