Bullpup boys upset by Circle, girls win

Girls

The McPherson Bullpups used a dominant third-quarter performance to pull away from Circle and secure a 52-36 victory in girls' basketball action Tuesday night at the Roundhouse. After holding a slim 20-14 advantage at halftime, the Bullpups exploded for a 24-10 run in the third quarter, building a commanding 20-point lead. Piper Alvord and Maryn Sandbo led the balanced McPherson attack with 13 points apiece, with Alvord catching fire from beyond the arc in the third period. Brooke Doile added 10 points to give the Bullpups three players in double figures. Despite a late push by Circle, led by Emma Johnson's double-digit scoring effort and Caitlyn Boats' perimeter shooting, McPherson maintained control throughout the final quarter. The victory snaps a brief losing streak for the Bullpups, who look to build momentum with upcoming league matchups against Mulvane and Winfield to close out the regular season.

Boys

In a stunning upset, the Circle Thunderbirds defeated the McPherson Bullpups 66-51 Friday night, marking the first time in history that Circle has claimed victory at the legendary Roundhouse. Under the guidance of head coach Jordan Crawford, himself a former Bullpup, Circle established dominance early and never relinquished control. The Thunderbirds jumped out to a 18-8 first-quarter lead behind Landen Bouldra's sharp shooting and maintained a double-digit advantage through much of the contest. Despite a fourth-quarter rally by the Bullpups that narrowed the gap to 7, Circle's poised free-throw shooting in the closing minutes sealed the historic win. McPherson's Jett Pyle led all Bullpups with 18 points in the losing effort, while Bouldra led Circle with 28 points. The defeat leaves the Bullpups searching for answers as they face the unfamiliar territory of a home loss to the Thunderbirds.
