Kansas Legislature Changes State Fireworks Regulations; Hutchinson Maintains Local Rules

The Kansas Legislature amended state fireworks regulations during its 2025 session, implementing new operational dates for seasonal retailers while maintaining existing local restrictions in Hutchinson.

The legislative changes include new operational dates for seasonal retailers, allowing fireworks to be sold from temporary tents between June 20 and July 8. During this period, vendors are permitted to operate within Hutchinson, and tent setups are expected to occur throughout the city.

Fire Marshal Michael Cain announced another significant change that allows the sale of fireworks year-round from permanent buildings throughout the state, marking a departure from previous seasonal-only sales restrictions.

Despite the state-level changes, Hutchinson's local fireworks usage regulations remain unchanged. The dates during which fireworks can be used in the city continue to be June 30 to July 4, from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The Hutchinson Fire Department issued the press release to clarify the distinction between state sales regulations and local usage rules. For any inquiries regarding fireworks regulations, residents can contact the Fire Marshal's office at 620-694-2873.

The fire department emphasized that while state law now permits expanded sales opportunities, local municipalities retain authority over usage restrictions within their boundaries.
