1 Marion County Wind Farm Expansion Delayed by Six-Month Moratorium

Further development of Sunflower Wind Farm won’t take place until a moratorium of at least six months. After lengthy discussion and hearing from people who support expansion of the wind farm, commissioners voted Tuesday to have county counsel Brad Jantz draft a six-month moratorium so planning and zoning could review the county’s existing requirements. Tuesday’s meeting brought an overflow crowd of 24 to discuss or listen to conversation about westward expansion of Sunflower Wind Farm.

2 First Mormon Temple in Kansas Breaks Ground in Wichita

On Saturday morning, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints held a ceremony to prepare for the church’s first temple in Kansas. It was first announced in 2022 that a temple would be built in Wichita. Previously, the nearest locations were Oklahoma City and Kansas City, MO. It will be located at Meridian and 51st in northwest Wichita.

3 Wichita Settles Lawsuit, Overhauls Controversial Police Gang List

The Wichita Police Department’s “gang list” that targeted young Black and Latino residents based on where they lived, the clothes they wore and funerals they attended will be overhauled after a federal judge approved a settlement agreement in August in a class-action lawsuit. The American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas and Kansas Appleseed sued the City of Wichita in 2021 alleging constitutional violations on behalf of Progeny, a Wichita-based criminal justice reform organization that focuses on youth empowerment. The suit received class action status in 2023, and the Wichita City Council voted unanimously in April to settle the case for $625,000, which went toward litigation costs and the services of a Johnson County judge who will oversee implementation of the policy changes.

4 U.S. Farm Income Expected to Decline Only 4.4% in 2024

U.S. farm income is predicted to decline far less than expected in 2024, with a government forecast no longer anticipating what would have been the largest profit decline in close to two decades. Farm income is expected to decrease 4.4% to $140 billion with escalating livestock and egg values boosting overall industry prospects, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture forecast released on Thursday. In February, the USDA predicted close to a 26% decline in income, a record drop.

5 Global Food Prices Drop Slightly as Cereal, Sugar, Meat Decline

The FAO Food Price Index* (FFPI) stood at 120.7 points in August 2024, marginally down from its revised figure for July, as decreases in the price indices for sugar, meat and cereals outweighed increases in those for vegetable oils and dairy products. Compared to historical levels, the FFPI in August averaged 1.1 percent lower than its corresponding value one year ago and 24.7 percent below its peak of 160.3 points reached in March 2022. The FAO Cereal Price Index averaged 110.1 points in August, down 0.6 points (0.5 percent) from July and 14.9 points (11.9 percent) from its August 2023 value. Global wheat export prices fell month-on-month, reflecting a sluggish international demand and strong competition among exporters, especially from competitively priced Black Sea supplies. Higher-than-previously-expected wheat production in Argentina and the United States of America also contributed to the softer price tone. By contrast, world maize prices firmed slightly, mostly underpinned by concerns over the impact of heatwaves on yields in the European Union and parts of the United States of America. Tighter domestic supplies in Ukraine, with a downward revision to the country’s production forecast, also provided support. Among other coarse grains, world prices of barley fell while those of sorghum increased.  The FAO All Rice Price Index increased by 0.6 percent in August, as the quotations for non-Indica rice increased somewhat under the influence of seasonal tightness and currency appreciations of some exporting countries against the United States dollar.

Illinois rallies in the 4th quarter to beat No. 19 Kansas

By Clark Goble

Kansas football failed its first true test of season, falling 23-17 to Illinois on the road. QB Jalon Daniels threw three interceptions and did not look sharp, leaving many fans wondering why KU didn’t stick with an effective running game led by RB Devin Neal. The Illinois fans stormed the field after the game, an indication that KU football is being taken seriously on a national level. The loss, though, means that KU will likely need to win the Big 12 conference in order to have a chance to qualify for the new 12-team playoff. The Jayhawks hope to bounce back against UNLV on Friday.
