1 Kansas congressional candidates discuss regulation reform and bipartisan cooperation at a Chamber forum
Second congressional district candidate Derek Schmidt said this could be a moment in American history when Congress could effectively push back against explosive growth in federal regulation. Schmidt, a former Kansas attorney general who won the Republican nomination for the open seat, said serious people didn’t argue for elimination of federal agencies or for an end to government regulation. However, he said recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions throttling power of the federal bureaucracy presented an opportunity for Congress to take action to contain power of unelected officials in Washington, D.C. Schmidt took part in a Kansas Chamber candidate forum Wednesday along with five other major party candidates for Congress. All four GOP nominees and two of four Democratic Party nominees participated in the question-and-answer program. U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids, the 3rd District Democrat, didn’t attend. Nor did the Democrat running against U.S. Rep. Ron Estes of the 4th District in Wichita. Former U.S. Rep. Nancy Boyda, who captured the Democratic nomination in the 2nd District of eastern Kansas, spoke before her rival Schmidt closed out the event. But Boyda also argued the nation could no longer let fester a persistent problem — the relentless partisanship and division damaging the nation. Boyda told members of the Kansas Chamber in the audience that they wouldn’t be fulfilling their roles if they didn’t put pressure on the Kansas congressional delegation to work in a bipartisan manner on behalf of Kansans. She made her point personal, suggesting U.S. Rep. Tracey Mann, a Salina Republican who serves the 1st District, had to find common ground with Democrats in a quest to improve the lives of Kansans.

2 Wyandotte County launches $1M plan to combat tuberculosis outbreak
As diagnosed tuberculosis cases in Wyandotte County this year have eclipsed those seen across all of Kansas in 2023, local public health officials are putting forward a roughly $1 million plan to deal with the outbreak and prevent further spread of the disease. Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, commissioners on Wednesday evening greenlit a months-long health department program that will use leftover federal COVID-19 pandemic relief money to stem the rising number of cases.

3 Neosho prosecutor sentenced to jail for misdemeanors after plea deal
A rural Kansas prosecutor apologized for his shortcomings and committing misdemeanor crimes before being escorted to jail Wednesday after years of investigation into allegations of more serious misconduct. In a hearing at the courthouse where he spent nearly 16 years as top prosecutor, Linus Thuston pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors and was sentenced to pay more than $3,000 and to serve 120 days in jail. He had stepped down as Neosho County attorney on Aug. 13. The hearing was a culmination of seven years of scrutiny and criminal investigations. Retired District Judge Merlin Wheeler accepted a plea deal from Thuston’s attorney and the Kansas Attorney General’s Office, which prosecuted the case, but he rejected their agreement to avoid jail time for Thuston. Under the deal, Thuston will avoid being prosecuted for any other cases that were investigated by the attorney general’s office.

5 Chiefs debut rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy in season opener win
The Kansas City Chiefs made key investments in the speed of their offense this offseason coming off their second-straight Super Bowl title — including a trade up in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft to select wide receiver Xavier Worthy. As the Chiefs began their quest for a third straight title, quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his offense took full advantage of their speedy rookie in a 27-20 win against the Baltimore Ravens at Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday night. That Kansas City offense looked just as sharp as they did seven months ago in Las Vegas at Super Bowl LVIII, and somehow even quicker. The added wrinkle of Worthy — who ran the fastest 40-yard dash in NFL Combine history — led to two touchdowns Thursday, first on a 21-yard sprint to score the Chiefs’ first points of the season, and later off a Mahomes pass, which came on a 35-yard catch-and-run. He finished with just three touches for 68 yards and two scores.
