1. Suspect in Topeka Bank Robbery, Homicide Dies by Suicide After Multi-County Chase

SALINA - A 47-year-old Topeka man accused of an alleged bank robbery and homicide died Tuesday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after leading law enforcement on a multi-county high-speed pursuit, according to a joint statement from the FBI, Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP), and Topeka Police Department. The alleged suspect, identified as Anthony Marshall Jr., was wanted in connection with the robbery of Equity Bank located at 3825 S.W. 29th Street in Topeka. That robbery was reported at approximately 9:07 a.m. on Monday, May 6. Later that same day, Topeka police responded to a shooting at a residence in the 2700 block of S.E. Minnesota Avenue, in the city’s Highland Park neighborhood. Officers located a deceased woman at the scene, later identified as Kathleen Hayes, 40, of Topeka. During a Wednesday morning press conference, authorities confirmed Hayes as Topeka’s seventh homicide victim of 2025. Police said Marshall and Hayes were known to one another. The next day, on Tuesday, May 7, the Kansas Highway Patrol reported that Marshall became the subject of a pursuit beginning around 10:14 a.m., when troopers assisted Marion County authorities. Scanner traffic indicates the pursuit escalated at 10:20 a.m., with KHP requesting air support and notifying agencies in McPherson and Saline counties. Marshall, reportedly driving a Ford pickup, reached speeds up to 100 mph and maneuvered around multiple stop-stick deployments. As the chase continued north through Galva and onto Interstate 135, officers noted the suspect appeared to be talking on a phone and actively blocking efforts to stop the vehicle. At around 10:35 a.m., the vehicle was observed with damaged tires, reportedly from stop sticks. Salina Police Department was placed on alert, and law enforcement prepared to block exits into the city, though the vehicle was ultimately stopped before reaching Salina. By 10:40 a.m., the suspect’s vehicle had exited the roadway and was surrounded in a ditch near Lindsborg. Bean bag rounds were reportedly deployed. Moments later, at approximately 10:50 a.m., reports indicate Marshall suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. A firearm was recovered, and emergency medical services were requested. The FBI responded to the scene, instructing that it be preserved for further investigation.

2. Kansas Measles Cases Climb to 56; New Infections in Reno, Sedgwick Linked to International Travel

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The Kansas Department of Health and Environment confirmed that as of Wednesday, May 14, there are 56 provisional measles cases in Kansas, including two cases in Reno and Sedgwick counties that are “thought to be associated with international travel.” Last week, Sedgwick County reported its first measles case since 2017. The Sedgwick County Health Department confirmed that the patient was an unvaccinated child between the ages of 5 and 10 years old who was exposed during travel out of the county. As of May 14, Sedgwick and Reno are among the six Kansas counties with a range of at least one, but no more than five confirmed measles cases. KDHE doesn’t provide an exact number of cases for counties with fewer than six but indicates just one confirmed case each in Sedgwick and Reno counties, with data for the identified outbreak in southwest Kansas accounting for 54 of the state’s 56 total cases. In its data, regarding the measles outbreak initially reported in March in southwest Kansas, Gray County by far maintains the highest number of cases at 21. Data from May 14 shows Haskell County with eight cases, followed by Stevens County with seven, Kowa County with six and Finney, Ford, Grant, Morton, Reno and Sedgwick counties with ranges of one to five. Breaking down the cases by age, children are the most heavily impacted. KDHE data shows 35 of the state’s 56 cases are in children aged 10 or younger: 19 in the 0-4-year-old group and 16 cases in children from 5 to 10 years old. Among the 54 outbreak cases in southwest Kansas, the KDHE shows that 45 were unvaccinated.

4. GOP Field for Kansas Governor Swells: Six Republicans Already Vying for 2026 Nomination

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - About a year and a half out from the next gubernatorial election in Kansas, there’s already a crowded field of Republicans vying to flip the governor’s seat following what will be the eight-year run of Democrat Laura Kelly. As of Wednesday, May 14, six Republicans have announced their campaigns for Kansas governor. Of the six, one has formally filed to run for the 2026 Primary next August. That primary election will determine who will represent the GOP in the November 2026 general election. The six Republicans who’ve come forward to run for governor include Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab, former governor Jeff Colyer, Wichita business owner Stacy Rogers, podcaster Doug Billings (self-described as a “MAGA conservative outsider), former Kansas House representative Charlotte O’Hara, and former Wichita school board member and data analytics firm founder Joy Eakins.

5. Missouri Stadium Funding Plan for Chiefs, Royals Derailed by Senate Abortion Dispute

A plan to keep the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals in Missouri by partially funding stadiums for the teams is dead for now after the state Senate ended its annual session in bitter acrimony over abortion. Gov. Mike Kehoe had attempted to push the plan through the General Assembly on a lightning-fast timeline this week. But the Republican chief executive, a former car salesman who entered office in January, came away without a passed plan. The proposal is almost certain to come before lawmakers again. Kehoe previously signaled he was open to calling a special session if the legislature didn’t approve the measure this week.
