1. Senator Marshall’s Town Hall Booed, Staff Blames Democrats

After a video went viral on social media of U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall being booed as he left a contentious town hall meeting in western Kansas, the Republican senator's staff is blaming Democrats. "Democrat operatives who couldn't place Oakley, Kansas on a map before today sabotaged a local town hall — even still Senator Marshall stayed and answered every question that was asked for 45 minutes," Brent Robertson, Marshall's chief of staff, said in a statement. Marshall held the town hall Saturday morning in Oakley, a town of about 2,000 people along I-70 that's closer to Denver than it is to Topeka. The little-publicized town hall at the Logan County Hospital was the same weekend as the Kansas Republican Party's annual convention in Goodland, near the Colorado border. President Donald Trump posted Monday morning on Truth Social that "Paid 'troublemakers' are attending Republican Town Hall Meetings. It is all part of the game for the Democrats, but just like our big LANDSLIDE ELECTION, it's not going to work for them!" Marshall shared the post on X, writing "Can confirm." "You know this is one of the rudest audiences I've ever had," Marshall said, eliciting a mix of cheers and jeers from the crowd. Someone said, "They're not from western Kansas," to which someone else replied, "I am," as several people raised their hands to indicate they were as well.

2. Senator Moran Calls Politics a Spectacle After Town Hall Fallout

In the wake of a heated town hall held by Senator Roger Marshall in Oakley over the weekend, 12 News sought answers from Kansas lawmakers about the current political climate in Washington. On Monday, Senator Jerry Moran made an appearance in Wichita, where he briefly addressed the ongoing political concerns. Moran was in Wichita touring the National Institute for Aviation Research alongside Northrop Grumman CEO, but took time to answer a few questions regarding the recent town hall in Oakley and the state of politics in Washington. When asked about the fallout from Senator Marshall’s contentious town hall, Moran described the current political environment as “a spectacle,” emphasizing how the discussions happening in Washington have become increasingly difficult to educate the public about. He added that his focus remained on staying connected with Kansans. Lastly, when asked about President Trump’s recent conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Moran expressed his support for U.S. involvement in Ukraine, advocating for continued U.S. support against Russian aggression. “The United States is safer whenever we are aligned with our allies and we are in a continued effort to push the Russians and Putin out of Ukraine,” said Moran.

3. Kansas Property Tax Relief Stalls as Appraisal Notices Arrive

Kansas homeowners are receiving appraisal notices in the mail, while the Legislature has yet to settle on a property tax relief plan. Two months into the legislative session where lawmakers agreed that property tax relief was a priority, the House and Senate have not yet sent a bill to the governor's desk or placed a constitutional amendment on the ballot. In Topeka, the Shawnee County appraiser mailed change of value notices on Friday to about 62,500 real estate parcels. In years past, legislators have reported hearing from constituents upset with increased property values, which often lead to higher taxes.

5. Triple Threat Storm to Hit Northeast Kansas Tuesday

A strong and impactful storm system is expected to bring northeast Kansas a "triple threat" of high winds, severe thunderstorms and potential blizzard conditions from Tuesday into Wednesday, the National Weather Service said. The late-winter system could affect trees and power lines, potentially causing electrical outages, said a graphic posted on the website of the weather service's Topeka office.
