1 Nancy Boyda Wins Close Race for Democratic Nomination in Open KS-02
Former U.S. Rep. Nancy Boyda secures the Democratic nomination, defeating Matt Kleinmann and positioning herself for a political comeback.
The last Democrat to represent an eastern Kansas district in Congress won the party’s nomination for the now-open seat, keeping her bid for a political comeback alive. Former U.S. Rep. Nancy Boyda, who held the 2nd District seat in 2007 and 2008, defeated Matt Kleinmann in Tuesday’s primary. Kleinmann is a public health advocate who was a member of the 2008 national champion University of Kansas men’s basketball team. Boyda won the nomination even though she riled up some party activists by positioning herself toward the political center for what she saw as a more viable general election campaign in the Republican-leaning district. She lost her 2008 race for reelection.

2 Derek Schmidt Wins GOP Primary for Open KS-02
Former Attorney General Derek Schmidt, endorsed by Trump, claims victory in the Republican primary for the 2nd District, outpacing Jeff Kahrs and Shawn Tiffany.
the 2nd congressional district … generated the most interest because U.S. Rep. Jake LaTurner, a Topeka Republican, decided not to seek reelection. The opening attracted a field of five Republican candidates. It was a race highlighted by former Attorney General Derek Schmidt, who earned former President Donald Trump’s endorsement. Schmidt is seeking to rebound after losing the 2022 race for governor. Before all 1,070 precincts reported, Schmidt declared victory in the primary. He built a comfortable lead with 53% of the vote and never relinquished it. Topekan Jeff Kahrs, endorsed by former Gov. Sam Brownback, and Council Grove feedlot owner Shawn Tiffany were far back at 18% and 20%, respectively. The other candidates were in single digits.

3 Kansas Congressional Incumbents Coast to Primary Election Victories
Reps. Ron Estes, Sharice Davids, and Tracey Mann face minimal opposition, securing easy wins in their respective primary races.
Three incumbents representing Kansas in the U.S. House didn’t sweat outcome of the primary election Tuesday — two didn’t even have an opponent.
U.S. Rep. Ron Estes, a Republican in the 4th District drawn around Wichita, had no opponent. In November, he must go up against Sedgwick Democrat Esau Freeman. Three-term Democratic U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids, of the Kansas City area’s 3rd District, likewise had no primary challenger.
In the 1st District, which was transformed through redistricting into a bizarre mix of the Democratic enclave of Lawrence and the conservative Republican western portion of the state, U.S. Rep. Tracey Mann easily defeat GOP opponent Eric Bloom of Lawrence. Mann received 88% of the vote.

4 Prasanth Reddy Wins GOP Primary in Kansas's 3rd District
Dr. Prasanth Reddy secures the Republican nomination, setting up a contest against Democratic incumbent Sharice Davids in the general election.
Dr. Prasanth Reddy won the Republican 3rd Congressional District primary Tuesday night, giving him the chance to flip the increasingly-blue district back to red. Reddy beat Karen Crnkovich by about 3,000 votes and a 53% to 47% margin in unofficial election returns in the Republican primary for the Kansas City-area seat in Congress. He raised around eight times as much money as Crnkovich. Reddy pulled in $1.3 million in campaign contributions. He now faces Democratic U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids and Libertarian Steve Roberts in the general election.
Davids beat incumbent U.S. Rep. Kevin Yoder in 2018. The district was redrawn in 2022 to include more conservative votes, but Davids’ victory over Republicans only increased.

5 Kansas Sees Historically Low Voter Turnout in 2024 Primary Election
Primary voter turnout plummets, with advance voting numbers significantly down from previous years.
8/2/2024
Thus far, there have been 64,515 ballots cast in the 2024 primary election cycle during advance voting. That is 124,283 fewer ballots cast than in 2022 and 125,259 fewer than in 2020. The last year Kansas saw a similar election was in 2016, which was a low turnout election. There were approximately 411,000 voters who participated, equaling 24% turnout.
8/6/24
Without a special question on a hot-button issue or much in the way of crowded, competitive fields to narrow nominations, the 2024 primary election across Kansas yielded a much lower turnout than in the previous two midterm primaries in 2020 and 2022. In Sedgwick County, the turnout was incredibly low compared to the last presidential election year, 2020. Four years ago, Sedgwick County recorded a voter turnout of nearly 30% for the primaries. Sedgwick County Election Commissioner Laura Rainwater said this year, the elections office saw a turnout of a little less than 10%, about one-third of the turnout from the previous elections.
