1 Former Marion Police Chief to Face Felony Charge After Raid
Special prosecutors plan to charge former Marion Police Chief Gideon Cody with a low-level felony following a controversial raid, despite finding no criminal actions in the investigation process.
Special prosecutors plan to charge former Marion Police Chief Gideon Cody with a low-level felony for his actions following the raid he led last year on the Marion County Record and the homes of the newspaper publisher and a councilwoman. But the special prosecutors also concluded that police — despite their misunderstanding of evidence, a rushed investigation, and faulty and unlawful search warrants — didn’t commit any crimes by investigating a baseless suspicion of identity theft or carrying out the raid.

2 KS-02 Primary for Open Congressional Seat
The Kansas primary sees comeback attempts from former Attorney General Derek Schmidt and former U.S. Rep. Nancy Boyda, vying for the open 2nd District congressional seat.
An open congressional seat in eastern Kansas inspired two political comeback attempts in the state's primary Tuesday, one from the last Democrat to hold it and the other from a former Republican attorney general who lost the 2022 governor's race. Three-term former Attorney General Derek Schmidt has former President Donald Trump's endorsement in a five-candidate GOP contest in the 2nd District. His two most formidable opponents were Shawn Tiffany, a rancher, and Jeff Kahrs, a top regional health official during Trump's administration. The Democratic race pits former U.S. Rep. Nancy Boyda, who held the seat in 2007 and 2008, against Matt Kleinmann, a community health advocate and member of the 2008 national champion University of Kansas men's basketball team. Boyda has positioned herself toward the political center, riling some party activists. The district's two-term GOP incumbent Jake LaTurner is not running again.

3 Kansas Lawmakers Subpoena 2022 Election Records from Ford County
The Kansas Legislature's auditing arm has subpoenaed election records from Ford County related to the 2022 general election, following previous audit difficulties.
The Kansas Legislature's auditing arm is subpoenaing records from a southwestern county related to an election that took place two years ago. The Legislative Post Audit Committee voted Monday to approve a subpoena demanding records from Ford County Clerk Debbie Cox related to the 2022 general election. The move comes after the Kansas Legislative Division of Post Audit, the Legislature's nonpartisan auditing arm, ran into difficulties with that county when performing a previous election audit.

5 Tarantula Migration Season Begins in Southeastern Colorado and Southwest Kansas
Thousands of male tarantulas embark on their annual mating migration across southeastern Colorado and southwest Kansas, seeking undisturbed prairie rangelands.
It's the stuff of nightmares for some, but it's simply summer in southeastern Colorado and southwest Kansas, where thousands – yes, thousands – of male tarantulas will make the trek to find a mate. The Texas brown tarantula, with a leg span of about 4 to 5 inches, typically makes the journey from late August to October once it reaches sexual maturity at around 10 years old. But there's no need to bug out if you see the fuzzy eight-legged creature, as they're pretty much harmless, said Mario Padilla, head entomologist at the Butterfly Pavilion and Insect Center near Denver.
The spiders are looking for undisturbed prairie rangelands, because that's where females are often found. According to a Pratt Tribune article in 2017, the arachnids are said to be thick sometimes along a highway near Medicine Lodge. So much so that bodies are heard crunching under tires in September. Daren Riedle, Wildlife Diversity Coordinator at Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks near Pratt, said it's usually males that are seen crossing highways. The females stay put for the most part, he said.
