About this site

citizen journal is a newspaper for the 21st century based on classic journalistic ideals. We don’t deliver a printed paper every morning but we do deliver information when it breaks on iPhones, Androids, the Internet, and podcasts. citizen journal focuses on local news and sports and does so in an economically sustainable and innovative way. citizen journal is supported by local advertisers and is FREE for readers

Since 2000, 3,200 US newspapers have closed or merged. This reflects a drop of roughly one-third of all papers since the early 2000s. Each closing leaves a community without local sports coverage, a municipal government without oversight from its citizenry, and a town fragmented, its population drifting in an algorithmically driven sea of social media posts and fake news. The remaining newspapers have been hollowed out by national media companies. They no longer deliver news relevant to their readers.

citizen journal offers three flagship products: a daily national news summary, a daily Kansas news summary, and a weekly local news summary. Each issue contains 5 paragraph-length stories that are made to be read in 5 minutes. We also offer a growing assortment of local sports reporting, in depth journalism, and other content. We currently operate in McPherson, Salina, and Hutchinson and plan to expand to more Kansas cities in 2025.
