Ten people were killed and dozens injured after a man intentionally drove a pickup truck into a large crowd in the Bourbon Street area of New Orleans early Wednesday, city officials and police said. Around 3:15 a.m. local time, a man drove down Bourbon Street “at a very fast pace” and “was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could,” New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said Wednesday. “This is not a DUI situation.” Kirkpatrick said that 35 injured people were taken to hospitals but that there could be more who were taken to others. The city’s emergency preparedness agency, NOLA Ready, said on its website earlier that 30 people were injured in the mass casualty incident that took place on Canal and Bourbon Street. The suspect, who went around barricades to crash into the crowd, also fired on officers after he crashed the vehicle, Kirkpatrick said; two officers were shot but in stable condition. “He was hell-bent on creating the carnage and the damage that he did,” Kirkpatrick said, noting the FBI would be taking over the investigation. The FBI’s assistant special agent in charge for New Orleans, Alethea Duncan, said that “this is not a terrorist event” but that authorities were working on confirming whether an improvised explosive device that was found in the area was viable.

The driver of the pickup truck is dead after getting into a shootout with police after he ran over pedestrians and crashed, according to two law enforcement officials speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing. The incident is being investigated as a suspected act of terrorism, the officials said.
